I did this tattoo on my father in rememberance of my passed grandfather. The figure in the photo is a bronze statue of a lone sailor. The airplanes trailing off in the background are performing a manuver where one plane flys away from the group to represent the loss of a comrad. the words in the banner read "Mein Vater" which is german for "my father".
